School Adopts Erasable Toner MFPs

Toshiba e-Studio 306
In order to adhere to its sustainability-based agenda, Millfields Community School in Hackney, London, has invested a range of infrastructure improvements, such as solar PV panels, in order to provide a "cleaner, equitable, and more sustainable environment".

To further this goal, the school's Business Manager, Stefania Antoniazzi, was looking to reduce the amount of waste paper being generated, explaining: "Excess printing is a huge financial burden on educational institutions like ours and the majority of paper waste occurred from users printing to a device and then forgetting, or simply not bothering, to collect their documents. This resulted in a huge amount of wastage that had to be addressed."

Antoniazzi contacted office solutions supplier Direct Tec, whose Sales Director Simon Riley suggested she visit Toshiba TEC's showroom in London, where a full range of devices were on display. It was here that Antoniazzi selected Toshiba e-STUDIO306LP, featuring unique erasable toner technology, and the associated e-STUDIO RD30 eraser unit, along with a number of other Toshiba MFPs. The eraser unit allows used paper to be fed into it and will then heat the ink, erasing the print and providing a blank sheet to be used again up to five times, cutting paper usage by up to 80%.

Commenting on the devices, Antoniazzi said: "Integrating it into our day-to-day operations couldn't have been easier and it means that we can monitor the recycling of the paper, which we have been able to reuse up to 10 times. What's more, Toshiba TEC also provided a number of Pilot FriXion ball pens, which also have erasable ink, so that we can recycle annotated documents and even exam papers."

In terms of savings, Antoniazzi said: "As well as having to reduce our regular paper order, we worked out that the print jobs sent but not released had a value of $2,324. This equates to 39,000 sheets of paper that we didn't use, and we have estimated that we will save in excess of $200,600 over the next three years – money which can be reinvested to provide our pupils with an even better learning environment."

Samsung Targets Enterprises with New A4 and A3 MFPs

Samsung Printer Cartridges
Earlier this fall, Samsung Electronics America announced the "Smartify" campaign, aimed at increasing awareness of Samsung's brand in the B2B channel and promoting the company's printing solutions for businesses. The hardware that Samsung is promoting via this campaign includes the ProXpress M4583FX and M4580FX A4 monochrome MFPs, the Android-powered devices we have written about previously , along with some hardware scheduled for availability via the BTA channel in the fourth quarter of this year: the MultiXpress M5370LX, an A4 monochrome MFP; the MultiXpress X4300LX series of A3 color MFPs; and the MultiXpress K4300LX family of A3 monochrome MFPs. A Samsung spokesperson recently shared more information about these devices.

Continuing to Push into A3 Market
Samsung, which had long been a serious player in the A4 laser printer markets, especially in the low end of the market, signified its intent to move upmarket and compete against copier vendors several years ago, starting with the introduction of A4 products such as the MultiXpress SCX-6555N in 2008. Then, in 2011, Samsung announced its own A3 MFPs that would be distributed via copier dealers, indicating it would compete head-to-head against traditional copier vendors . In 2012, Samsung announced its own managed print program and rolled out still more A3 devices.

Now Samsung's years-long strategy to move its MFPs into enterprises and take away share from traditional copier OEMs continues with the introduction of the MultiXpress X4300LX and MultiXpress K4300LX series. Samsung informs us that the MultiXpress X4300LX A3 color MFPs, the 25/25 ppm X4250XL and the 30/30 ppm X4300LX, replace the CLX-9201NA, CLX-9251NA, and CLX-9301NA that Samsung announced two years ago. Meanwhile, the MultiXpress K4300LX series, which consists of the 25 ppm K4250LX, the 30 ppm K4300LX, and the 35 ppm K4350LX, replace the SCX-8123NA and SCX-8128NA, which were also introduced in 2012 alongside the older A3 color devices.

According to Samsung, one key improvement is that the new units include a much bigger, better touch screen. Whereas the older units had a 7-inch color touch screen, the new units use the same touch screen introduced with the ProXpress M4583FX and M4580FX A4. The Samsung Smart User Interface is powered by the Android operating system and is essentially a 10.1-inch LCD touch screen that operates like an Android tablet. The Samsung spokesperson tells us, "This user-friendly UI provides intuitiveness, usability, and extendibility at the same which ensures perfect compatibility with various Android-based smart devices."

Another big improvement, says the spokesperson, is that then new units are equipped with dual scan technology, enabling the Samsung machines to deliver "best-in-class scanning speeds." Other enhancements include support for feature Samsung's eXtensible Open Architecture (XOA) and optional wireless and NFC (Active Type) printing.

Higher-Yield Supplies
Samsung indicates that its latest A3 devices have one additional improvement over the 2012 models they replace: new consumables with significantly higher yields, resulting in lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Whereas the older CLX-9201NA, CLX-9251NA, and CLX-9301NA use toner cartridges with yields of 20,000 pages or black and 15,000 pages each for cyan, magenta, and yellow, the new MultiXpress X4300LX series uses the new CLT-K808S black toner that delivers 23,000 pages and the CLT-C808S cyan, CLT-M808S magenta, and CLT-Y808S yellow toner cartridges, rated at 20,000 pages apiece. Other required consumables on the new color units are the CLT-R808 imaging unit, rated at 100,000 pages, and the CLT-W808 waste-toner bottle with a yield of 33,500 pages. Samsung declined to provide manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRPs) for consumables, saying pricing is set by dealers.

Similarly, while the SCX-8123NA/8128NA-NX took a 25,000-page toner cartridge, the new MultiXpress K4300LX series takes either the 25,000-page MLT-D708S toner or a higher-yield, 35,000-page cartridge, the MLT-D708L. Other consumables include the 200,000-page MLT-D708L imaging unit and the 100,000-page MLT-W708 waste-toner bottle.

Like the previous models, the new A3 devices use Samsung's chemically produced polymerized toner.

A4 M5370LX
Along with these A3 devices, Samsung introduced the MultiXpress M5370LX, a high-speed (55 ppm) A4 monochrome MFP. We believe Xerox used the same Samsung engine employed in the new M5370LX in its new WorkCentre 4265 series.

Samsung tells us that the MultiXpress M5370LX is an addition to the company's lineup, but it may in time replace the SCX-6555N-NX models noted earlier, as well as the SCX-6645N. The M5370LX offers similar improvements over these older Samsung devices that the A3 mono and color machines did over their predecessors. The machine has an MSRP of $5,553.99.

The M5370LX uses new consumables including the MLT-D358S black toner cartridge with a yield of 30,000 pages and the MLT-R358 imaging unit, which rated at 100,000 pages. Again, Samsung did not provide supplies pricing as the MuliXpress M5370LX will be sold through its dealer channel.

New Inkjet Printers Print Onto Glass

Printing on glass
Wide-format OEM Durst has produced a machine that prints inkjet directly onto glass.

ProPrint reported on the release of the Rho Vetrocer wide-format glass printer from Durst, which was launched at the Glasstec 2014 event in October, and which was launched at the Glasstec 2014 event in October, and which applies ceramic ink "directly to the glass without the need for a pricey metal screen for each color". The machine is available in three models – the Basic, Presto and HS.

The news outlet stated that this machine is among a number that are "encroaching on one of the last remaining screen printing territories" by "binding ink directly to the glass at what proponents say is a lower cost". Durst meanwhile noted that the machine "will make printed decorative glass more affordable for printers looking for extra revenue streams".

The aforementioned screen printing process, which is usually used for glass printing, requires each color to be printed onto glass followed by "drying or baking before the next is applied", and, "runs the risk of the second or third colors printing out of register due to a change in the material after tempering".

In contrast, the Vetrocer "binds the ink to the glass permanently" through a baking process "inside an external oven" at temperatures between 680 and 700°C – this means the ink "becomes part of the glass", and Durst states that it is capable of small to large volume jobs "without the need to replace templates", though a washing and drying unit is required to "clean out dust, grease, fingerprints, zinc and packaging".

Widths of 2,500 millimetres are supported, with a 3,300 millimetres version being worked on, and print resolution of 80 dpi is available. Mirrored printheads are used "to prevent color shifts and banding", and the three models – Basic, Presto and HS – feature speeds of 25 square-metresan hour, 55 sqm an hour and 105 sqm an hour, while transport belts, a baking oven and a loading and swivelling table are also available from Durst "to create a full line".

The news site commented that "the technology will open creative opportunities for architects and designers as well as commercial printers – who have the printing know-how, Photoshop and color management skills to capitalize on a market that is growing in Europe, and is likely to hit Australia in the near future".

HP cartridge achieves record-breaking print-out

One million digits of mathematical constant Pi printed using just one HP 8 ml ink cartridge.

PIworld.com reported that a record was broken after YouTube channel Numberphile partnered with HP Specialty Printing Systems' Denmark-based OEM customer HAS Systems in a print project, which saw one million digits of the mathematical constant Pi printed on a single roll of brown 70 gsm Kraft paper using only one HP Durable Black ink cartridge.

The print was "powered by HP Thermal Inkjet 2.5 technology", with the digits printed at HAS Systems' facility in Denmark in eight-point Courier New font. The digits took just over 48 minutes to print, and once completed, the print-out was rolled-out at a UK airfield, measuring 1.052 miles.

Brady Haran, filmmaker and video journalist at Numberphile, said: "HP ink withstood challenging UK weather conditions like wind, rain and mist, and the last digit was printed as clear as the first one this is a remarkable proof point for the reliability, consistency and efficiency of original HP inks."

The article states that the project has been "rated as a world record by an independent mathematical professor", and has submitted an application for the Guinness Book of World Records.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! However, we discovered something truly scary and evil. Your Printer Manufacturer can actually stop your printer from printing.
Happy Halloween! However, we discovered something truly scary and evil. Your Printer Manufacturer can actually stop your printer from printing. If you happen to purchase and use compatible or remanufactured products to lower your cost to print then by accepting a Firmware or Software Driver update, you could lock your printer to only operate with OEM Brand Products. Scary but true... The message is simple. Please, do not accept ANY changes to your printer(s). If you are happy with the printer's performance, then there will be no benefit for you to accept firmware upgrades disguised as product updates or system improvements or printer enhancements or any other phraseology used by the OEMs. Today's technology allows OEM Printer Manufacturers to control how your printer reads and reacts to the ink or toner cartridge chip and if it's not an OEM chip then it will lock the printing function and display a frightful warning. Similar to: “Your cartridge is empty”, “Your cartridge is not properly installed” or “Your cartridge is not recognized”. Protecting our customers and their desire to lower printing costs is a priority of Priceless. So please don't be fooled, don't click the “authorization to automatically upgrade your printer software (Firmware or Drivers)” when first installing your new printer or registering for warranty purposes. DON'T ALLOW FOR AUTOMATIC UPDATES! YOUR PRINTER WILL WORK BETTER IN THE MORNING! Remember these software and firmware updates are for the benefit of the manufacturer not yours. Anything that keeps you purchasing their branded ink and toner products is their ultimate goal. Like we learned many times, if it isn't broke don't fix it. Don't be part of the Group that is locked out from using any alternative and less costly products. Just Say No to any updates or new firmware offered (for free) by Lexmark, Samsung, Dell, IBM, Epson, Canon, HP, Brother or any OEM looking to take control over your equipment. Happy Halloween, enjoy the candy but stay away from Printer software updates, we hope we haven't scared you too much?

New HP Wide Format Printing App

HP Latex 360
The Latex Mobile app allows mobile printing for the HP’s Latex 300 wide format printers.

The app, showcased at the SGIA Expo by HP, introduces "smart printing capabilities" to the Latex 300 range of wide-format printers, and allows users to "remotely monitor their printers, track job status and receive printer alerts", offering an "innovative user experience" for the Latex 310, 330 and 360 devices in the range.

Xavier Garcia, Vice President and General Manager of HP's Large-Format Sign and Display Division, commented: "Print service providers (PSPs) are under increasing pressure from customers to deliver on-time, urgent jobs while providing guaranteed, industry-leading work. The HP Latex Mobile app marks the beginning of a new era of smart printing, giving customers peace of mind while they are at and away from the print shop, as well as helping them to better address time-sensitive requests and gain customer loyalty."

Jose María Miñarro, Manager at HP customer Miñarro Impresión, got to try the app, and added: "The HP Latex Mobile application has not only simplified my working processes, its remote monitoring capabilities also give me the confidence to know what’s happening while I’m out of the office."

The Latex Mobile app will be available for download in January next year for smartphones, and mid-2015 for tablets, with both releases for iOS and Android.

Printer Apps Are More Popular Than Smartwatch Apps

Mobile Apps
A new report from app analytics company App Annie focuses on "connected apps," or apps that require separate hardware to run — which includes everything from printers with Wi-Fi to the latest Android Wear smartwatches. Although wearable technology has received a lot of attention recently, the report suggests downloads for their usually required companion apps are still low.

App Annie's report looked at 30 apps that require an external piece of hardware to work and inferred the number of downloads on both the Apple App Store and Google Play they received this past August.

The most downloaded app in the batch was Chromecast, which is a strong sign of the $35 streaming stick is success over the past year. The second most downloaded connected app was Fitbit after that come a bunch of apps that suggest that a lot more people have cable set-top boxes and printers than pieces of wearable technology. It also implies that people like to download apps for something like a printer or a satellite TV box, even though those apps are not required.

App Annie divided the 30 selected apps into six categories, and the top two categories, Media and Productivity, accounted for roughly 70% of downloads among these apps over the time period. Apps categorized as media include Chromecast, DirecTV, DISH and GoPro. Productivity apps include a bunch of printer apps from companies like HP and Kodak, as well as Square's Register software.

Apps that connect to newer technologies related to smart homes, smartwatches, and wearable technology accounted for only 15% of downloads, and that is combining four loosely related categories together. While app downloads are not a perfect proxy for device sales, you would expect the two to correlate fairly closely. Apps in these categories include Fitbit, Jawbone UP, Pebble, Misfit Shine, Nest Mobile, Dropcam and Android Wear.

The App Annie report doesn’t provide estimates for the number of downloads over the period. For that, you’ll have to subscribe to App Annie’s premium services. You can take a look at the full report here.

New Branding Effort from Canon

Canon New Logo
Canon Unveils New Branding Effort, Invites Customers to "See Impossible"

On October 7, Canon announced the launch of a new branding effort, combined with a new logo and tagline. The logo incorporates the traditional Canon logo text along with a 3D visual of an expanding box and the tagline "See Impossible."

The box, according to Canon, symbolizes the company's desire to "break the boundaries of what is possible and shift the focus from Canon as being solely a manufacturer of quality digital imaging products to a company that empowers the creative spirit within its people and customers."

The associated website, seimpossible.usa.canon.com, is, according to Canon, a "digital hub housing consumer, professional, and commercial stories of inspiration, imagination, and innovative end-user applications of Canon imaging technology." Two sides of the box depicted on the site feature links: "See self-publishing" shows on-demand printing solutions, with a menu link to Canon's production print solutions, while "See smarter business" offers information on Canon office solutions and workflow automation. There are also links to Canon eye care technology and radiography systems.

"As a technology-based brand, Canon is constantly challenged to empower its customers in today's high-tech and fast-paced world in which new apps and innovations are launching every single day," said Joe Adachi, chairman and CEO for Canon U.S.A. "With imagination and customer focus at the core of the Canon business model, 'Canon See Impossible' will highlight the combined technological innovation and human ingenuity that makes the impossible possible. Our new rallying cry will extract creative thinking from a place of isolation, encourage exploration of the unknown, and showcase our creativity as it impacts the real world with limitless possibilities."

Reckless US Agency Expense on Printer Cartridges

Money Drain
The purchase by the Department of Agriculture was just one of a series of overspends by US government departments in the last year.

The Fiscal Times reported on what it calls a reckless federal shopping spree in the US, which saw government departments spend around $50 billion during the financial year, with September 30 being the final day of the year on which agencies "use it or lose it", spending the remainder of the cash given to them before the Treasury takes the rest back.

The agencies are said to spend all of their allocated funds because "Congress may not allocate as much the following year", which the sites notes "creates panic for federal workers scrambling to spend millions of dollars before they run out of time", as well as creating a "huge payday for contractors scoring big awards".

The large amount of money spent in the financial year included "impulse buys" on the final day, specifically the Department of Agriculture's outlay of $144,000 on toner cartridges, and the site noted that the Pentagon spent $5.5 billion alone on the final day of the year, with Department of Defense (DOD) officials "even sending an email encouraging employees to spend as much as they could".

This email, which the Washington Post obtained, saw Budget Officer Sannadean Sims and Procurement Officer Kathleen Miller state that "it is critical in our efforts to 100% of our available resources this fiscal year. It is also imperative that your organisation meets its projected spending goal for June".

Analysis of data from 2004 to 2009 by Harvard and Chicago universities saw that 8.7% of total federal spending in the USA occurs in the last week of the fiscal year, and the site notes that since the government spends so much money in such a short amount of time, some people have concerns that hasty purchases could result in problems down the road – like poor product selection.

The research also studied contract performances from 700 IT projects, worth a total of $130 billion, and found that projects awarded in the last week of the fiscal year were 2.2 to 5.6 times more likely to be of lower quality, with this issue able to be resolved if agencies were allowed to roll over their unused funds to the next fiscal year, a proposal similar to one made by President Obama's administration four years ago, though Congress never took it up.

Epson launches "world’s smallest” A4 inkjet printer

Epson's Workforce WF-100W is aimed at mobile workers due to its easy transportation.

Techradar reported on Epson's launch of the Workforce WF-100W, said to be the world's smallest and lightest commercial A4 inkjet printer, with the device being "slightly thicker than an A4 reach and about two-thirds the size" and weighing 3.53 lbs.

The printer can also be comfortably transported: due to its "brick form factor", and has an "integrated Li-Ion battery" which is able to be recharged using a USB port or a bundled AC adapter. Other features include a "tiny" LDC display showing "essential characteristics" of a print job along with the printer's status; a paper tray with a 50-sheet capacity; and Wi-Fi capabilities as users can connect to it "directly via Wi-Fi or as a networked printer" as well as through an Epson app. It is also compatible with Google Cloud Print and Apple AirPrint.

In terms of cartridges, the device uses two Epson ink cartridges and pigment ink.

Aimed at "mobile workers looking to print low quantity invoices, designs or other documents on the move", the Workforce WF-100W will first be available in Europe at a price of $387.

Latest Printers on the US Market

Printer
Canon, Brother and Sharp have just introduced their latest printers

TechRadar reported on the launch of three new cloud-connected Canon PIXMA inkjet printers aimed at "image-focused" businesses and consumers, with Canon noting that the devices "simplify" printing as well as scanning and editing photographs.

The new machines – the MG7520, MG6620 and MG5620 – are all connected to the PIXMA Printing Solutions application, which in turn links to Canon's Easy-PhotoPrint application to allow users to "print documents directly from websites and applications". TechRadar gave the example of users "tapping on a Facebook photo", scanning it onto the printer, editing it and printing it "without connecting any cords".

Two other applications included are Canon's Cloud Link and PictBridge programs, which can be used to "share scanned documents via email" and "connect Canon digital cameras directly to the printers without the need for a computer" respectively. The MG7520 is said to be "top-of-the-line" from the new range, and features a dual front tray, direct disc printing and six ink tanks capable of printing 9600 x 2400 dpi color photos.

The MG7520 also includes a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen and a range of different color choices for its exterior, including burnt orange, black, and white "with a mirror finish", and costs $199.99, whilst the MG6620 is available for $149.99 and the MG5620 for $99.99.

Twice.com shared the announcement of the value Brother SOHO (Small Office Home Office) monochrome laser printers, which includes the HL-2360DW, HL-L2320D, HL-2380DW, MFC-L2740DW, MFC-L2700DW and MFC-L2720DW machines.

The new models, Brother stated, "maintain the company's value suggested retail price points", with the single-function machines including a one-line LCD display that "prompts users with instructions for connecting to a wireless network", as well as automatic duplexing as standard alongside the Brother Web Connect interface for the MFPs, which allows users to "scan to and print from popular cloud services without the need of a computer".

The devices feature print speeds ranging from 27 ppm to 32 ppm, and contain a high-yield toner cartridge that can print up to 2,600 pages, in addition to a 250-sheet paper tray. Recommended retail prices are as follows: $149 for the HL-L2360DW; $119 for the HL-L2320D and the HL-L2380DW; $299 for the MFC-L2740DW; $199 for the MFC-L2700DW; and $249 for the MFC-L2720DW.

The MX-C301W, a desktop color MFP, was launched by Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America (SIICA), and features "flexible" workflow capabilities alongside a "compact footprint" designed to fit on a small desk, with wireless connectivity, a seven-inch touchscreen panel and print speeds of 30 ppm.

The printer also supports Sharp's OSA platform, which simplifies integration with partner network applications, as well as the OEM's Cloud Portal Office service, which offers document storage and sharing online. Its Sharpdesk Mobile free application also works with the printer, enabling "simplified" scans and prints from phones and tablets.

Security features include SSL encryption, confidential printing, secure faxing, and the ability to erase the hard drive's temporary memory by "overwriting encrypted data up to seven times", with the additional option to "overwrite all data" after a leasing period. The device is now available for both purchase and leasing in the US market.

Mike Marusic, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Operations at SIICA, stated: "More and more small businesses and workgroups are asking for high quality document capabilities that have the flexibility to connect with the latest technologies. The MX-C301W helps address this need with a desktop solution that not only provides business quality output, but is loaded with standard features, such as wireless connectivity, a touch-screen control panel and robust security protocols."

Priceless Ink & Toner Now Offers ColorMatch™ Wide-Format Printer Inkjet Cartridges

Priceless Ink & Toner
We at Priceless Ink & Toner are proud to announce the launch of our new ColorMatch™ Wide-Format printer inkjet cartridge series. The ColorMatch™ inks have been tested and proven to be the best choice for Wide Format inkjet printers for many reasons as listed below:

· All ColorMatch™ inks are fully OEM compatible. Our inkjet cartridges can be installed individually without any loss of quality. This is critical as inks do not run out at the same time. You do not need to buy complete sets – just replace them as needed. This provides a significant savings versus 'cheaper' suppliers that encourage you to change out the inks completely and flush the lines to avoid compatibility issues. You do not have the time to do that, and who needs the additional hassle?

· No color re-profiling is necessary. ColorMatch™ inks consistently duplicate the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) color gamut. Cheaper foreign imports may work well enough in your home inkjet printer, but are not suitable for high quality, wide format print jobs, were quality is your image. You will have the same high quality output from ColorMatch™ inks that you currently enjoy with OEM inks – but at a far better price! Again, what may appear cheaper can sometimes actually cost you more in the long run. Downtime from 'cheaper' ink change-outs and re-profiling can eat up your profitability for several days of production. ColorMatch™ inks are 'plug & print'. No re-profiling, no flush & fill; just install them and print – it is that easy!

· All ColorMatch™ inks are TAA compliant. This is essential if you are a federal agency or contractor. TAA refers to the Trade Agreements Act (19 U.S.C. & 2501-2581) which is intended to foster fair and open international trade. TAA requires that the U.S. Government may acquire only U.S. –made or designated country end products. This act requires that manufacturers must certify that each end product meets the applicable requirements. End products are 'those articles, materials and supplies to be acquired for public use'. Most cheap imports come from countries that do not abide by the Trade Agreements Act.

· All ColorMatch™ inks undergo rigorous quality assurance. Because our cartridges are pre-installed prior to packaging, 'chip read' errors as well as other potential problems are significantly reduced. Some of our customers even tell us that our inkjet cartridges are more reliable than the OEM!

· All ColorMatch™ inks are backed by a comprehensive guarantee. You and your printer are fully protected! In the unlikely event that there is damage to your printer as a result of using ColorMatch™ inks, we will pay for the parts and labor to repair the printer. Good luck getting that level of support from off-shore suppliers!

HP Thoughts Against the Remanufactured Laser Toner Cartridges

HP Printer Cartridges
Hewlett Packard / HP warns Australian business customers to "think twice before using remanufactured toner" in its business eNewsletter.

In its IT business eNewsletter, HP outlines reasons why it believes remanufactured toner "might be hurting instead of helping" businesses that use such products; firstly claiming that "it's not very reliable and may harm your printer" due to "critical cartridge components" in reused products being "very easily damaged or near the end of their usable life" and so are "more likely to fail".

It added that this could also "cause damage to your printer", citing research by Lyra Research, which was acquired by Photizo Group in 2012, with the research allegedly finding that "nearly one in 10 LaserJet customers using non-HP cartridges end up with a damaged printer that requires cleaning or repair, and 26% experience downtime as a result of cartridge problems".

Hidden costs are a further issue that HP claims remanufactured toner cartridges poses due to "hidden costs in the form of support calls, reprints, and wasted supplies" which may make using remanufactured toner "less economical than it might seem". As a result, the OEM stated that "non-HP toner cartridges can actually cost up to 10% more than original HP toner cartridges".

Continuing its list, HP stated that "it's not necessarily better for the environment" to use remanufactured toner, claiming that "remanufacturing rarely prevents toner ending up in landfills". It cited a 2014 study which allegedly found that "nearly 90% of the toner cartridges sold by the remanufacturers surveyed will ultimately be thrown away" as "most remanufacturers fail to collect their own products".

In terms of the technology of remanufactured toner, HP claims that "remanufacturers can't replicate HP technology exactly because HP technical specifications are proprietary and unpublished" and "most aftermarket toners lack uniformity in particle size". The OEM therefore concludes that "using remanufactured toner will guarantee that you aren't getting the quality your printer has the potential for producing".

Finally, HP highlights the potential issue of page yields, claiming that those of remanufactured cartridges "do not equal those of HP cartridges" as "most do not adhere to ISO standards for measuring page yield".

HP concludes that businesses should "do your research and figure out if it really will be as beneficial to your business as you might think" as "you could be surprised by the answer".
