Best Printers by Business Choice Awards 2015

Business Choice Awards 2015: Printers
Here are the companies making the best printing equipment and providing the best support.

The world talks a good game when it says "paperless" is the way to go, but printers are here to stay, especially in the work environment. Whether you work from home or at the corner office in the corporate tower, your desk is covered in print outs, and the printer in the corner is likely humming along all day long.

That's why, as part of the regular Readers' Choice Survey on printers every year conducted by PCMag, they made sure to ask not just about the little inkjets used to print the kids' art projects, but how readers feel about the high-end printing systems they use. After all, they can't stress-test all the printers in PCMag Labs reviews, so it helps to get the perspective of the people in the trenches.

The follow page reveals the results: the printer makers you should turn to when you want low costs, high reliability, and just an overall excellent experience. The magazine will also compare the results to what they saw last year, so you get a better idea of who is improving and what vendors are worth reconsidering. After all, even at a bargain price, an unreliable printer will get you nowhere.

Printers for Work
Last year the results were a neck-and-neck race between three favorite printer makers: Brother, Canon, and Epson. This year, things got even closer, yet in many ways easier to call.

Brother had the clear lead last year with an overall score of 8.6 (on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 indicating perfect overall satisfaction). For 2015, it fell back, leading to a three-way tie at 8.4 between Brother, Epson, and Xerox.

Overall Printer Scores
Red indicates a Business Choice winner.

In the end, PC Mag had to give the Business Choice Award to the two winners from last year, Brother and Epson. Both of them have best-in-class-scores for reliability (8.7 for each), a low number of products that needed actual repair (Brother at 6%, Epson at 5%), and excellent likelihood to recommend numbers (8.5 and 8.4, respectively).

Xerox, while it did well in that overall satisfaction question, can't compete in any other way. Its reliability score of 8.3 is behind most of the vendors that made the cut (only Dell and Lexmark did worse). Xerox also continues to have an embarrassingly high numbers of products that require repair, at 23%. That's almost one in four Xerox printers getting sent back to be fixed.

The big fall this year goes to Canon. A favorite in PCMag's Readers' Choice for over a decade, this is the first year the company has dropped out of favor in the home survey and now in the business-end survey. Canon's overall score of 8.2 puts it on par with HP, another huge name in the industry, but one that has never had the affinity with our audience that Canon has—or had. That said, Canon still had pretty excellent marks for reliability of 8.6, just behind Brother and Epson's 8.7. Canon's likelihood to be recommended is also just a hair lower than Epson, if you factor the Net Promoter scores, which show Epson at 51% and Canon at 48%.

When it comes to these numbers, the world of work printers is an open field. Samsung also has a fighting chance in a year or so, if it can improve reliability and cut back that 10% of units needing repair. It really could be a contender for the office printer market award. We'll see in 2016.

Methodology
For the 2015 Business Choice series, PCMag emailed survey invitations to their community members, specifically subscribers to their Readers' Choice Survey mailing list. This survey was hosted by Equation Research, which also performs PCMag's data collection. This survey was in the field from June 22, 2015 through July 12, 2015.

Respondents were asked to rate their business printer. They were asked multiple questions about their overall satisfaction as well as experiences with technical support within the past 12 months.

Because the goal of the survey is to understand how the printer compare to one another and not how one respondent's experience compares to another's, PCMag use the average of the printer manufacturer's rating, not the average of every respondent's rating. In all cases, the overall ratings are not based on averages of other scores in the table; they are based on answers to the question, "Overall, how satisfied are you with your printer for work?"

Scores not represented as a percentage are on a scale of 0 to 10 where 10 is the best.

Net Promoter Scores are based on the concept introduced by Fred Reichheld in his 2006 best seller, The Ultimate Question, that no other question can better define the loyalty of a company's customers than "how likely is it that you would recommend this company to a friend or colleague?" This measure of brand loyalty is calculated by taking the percent of respondents who answered 9 or 10 (promoters) and subtracting the percent who answered 0 through 6 (detractors).

HP to be Sued for False Advertising

HP Printer Supplies
HP faces false advertising class action in the USA in a case alleging "its printers don't operate as advertised".

Legal Newsline reported on the class action begun by consumer Anne Wolf at the US District Court for the Central District of California, which has targeted HP for alleged "false advertising". Wolf's suit against the OEM contends that its printers "don't operate as advertised" as the machines "can't download necessary software from the internet even though the company advertises they can".

Wolf's suit – case number 5:15-cv-01221 – has been taken on by lawyers Todd M. Friedman and Adrian R. Bacon, and lso seeks to "prevent HP from advertising" that its printers feature the 'HP Smart Install' option, which reportedly means "products can automatically download software from the internet". The case argues that this feature "has been disabled on some of the printers even though the company continues to advertise it".

In turn, the lawsuit alleges that "on the outside of the boxes of these printers, there is a statement assuring customers that these printers will be easy to install because of the inclusion of the 'HP Smart Install' feature". Wolf is seeking class action status for both the case and "for those who purchased the printers expecting the smart install feature", and is also looking to win damages of "more than" $5 million plus court costs.

The OEM previously settled three class actions pertaining to HP inkjet cartridges in October 2014, while another relating to printers was dismissed in 2012, and a class action focused on LaserJets was also settled in 2011.

Large Format 3D Printer in Shipping Containers

US-based company Southwest Florida 3D has turned old shipping containers into a "standard platform" for 3D devices to print in.

The Mille 3D printer can be stacked, shipped and parked in a driveway or garage, “and at the end of a road trip [you can] open the doors to a new object”, Southwest FL 3D founder Andy Tran told 3DPrint.com.

The news site said the innovation "could dramatically increase the mobility of 3D printing", while cutting production costs associated with the machines. It overcomes the issue that 3D printing is often not feasible for individuals as they cannot store and operate such a large-scale device. The shipping container-stored printer could potentially be "stacked, decorated, and customized however a user would like".

Tran said: "When you start building a large machine, one of the largest costs is the frame. The Mille solves this with its design and uses a watertight weather proof shipping container hull. 3D printer hardware bolts directly to the steel walls. Shipping containers offer standard interior and exterior sizes so virtually any container can be retrofitted."

Containers of lengths 20, 40, and 52 feet can be used, and the inventor said there is potential for expansion modules, including onboard batteries such as the solar-charged Tesla Power Wall, material shredding and extrusion options, a conveyor-belt style print bed and 3D scanners. The containers could become entirely mobile, automated 3D printing workstations.

Tran commented: "One extension module includes an onboard material handling module that shreds plastic to be extruded as filament. The filament can be mixed with other materials for various properties. With the advancement of new material technologies and hybrid filaments the Mille 3D printer will make large objects bigger and better."

He plans to either open-source the design on the 3DPB.com forum or to turn it into a commercial product, for creators to make their own with DIY kits.

How to Save on Printer Cartridges

Compatible and Remanufactured Printer Cartridges, Why Should You Buy Them

Compatible and Remanufactured Printer Cartridges

There are three categories which, explain the "Printer Cartridge" market today. These are the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) cartridges, compatible "new built" cartridges and the original OEM remanufactured product (commonly referred to as a recycled cartridges).

The OEM printer cartridges carry a heavy "promotion cost" and are therefore much more expensive in the consumer marketplace. These printer cartridges are priced to recapture most of the discount cost of the printer you purchase. The $89.00 wireless HP inkjet printer can cost you $75.00 every time you replace a set of cartridges. The old Gillette Theory "give them a free razor then sell them the blades" works well for the OEM printer manufacturers, when coupled with the scare tactic of losing the product warranty coverage. As a result of this marketing model the OEM manufacturers price their cartridges at a profit level making their ink and toner cartridge products one of the most expensive liquids in the world.

For an eye opening example, currently (one) 1 oz. of HP 920XLBK ink costs about $38.45 which calculates to $4,921.60 per gallon. For the same amount of money you can buy:

  • 1,922.50 gallons of gasoline
  • 1,235.58 gallons of milk
  • 310 bottles of Jack Daniels Whiskey (750 ml each)
  • 1,971 cans of Red Bull (12 oz. each)
  • 2,485 cans of Coca-Cola Zero (12 oz. each)

While you can purchase the same HP 920XLBK for a much lower price when you buy compatible or remanufactured cartridges. Usually you can save 40% - 70% when choosing quality alternative replacement printer supplies. The key words here is "quality alternative products".

Aftermarket ink and toner cartridges are not necessary lower quality than the OEMs. When manufactured or remanufactured by established companies, who use approved and certified manufacturing processes and testing standards. These products are produced in ISO 9001 / 1400 certified manufacturing facilities under stringent quality control guidelines to ensure the highest level of quality and reliability. All cartridges go through approved testing and inspection procedures to meet the high standards of OEM quality. The print quality form remanufactured cartridges has been much improved over the years and today meets (and in some cases exceeds) the quality of an OEM product at a much more reasonable cost. You receive the same quantity of ink or toner in a product at substantial cost reduction simply by eliminating marketing and promotion expenses.

There are additional ways to save on ink and toner cartridges. When you purchase from online web-stores check the shipping options (do they offer free shipping with a reasonable quantity order), do they have an additional discounted pricing policy, are you paying a sales or use tax because they have a physical location in your State and finally, what is their Warranty Replacement Policy. Remember, these Warranty Policies, normally cover defective workmanship and materials not whether you run out of ink or toner within a year of use.

Today certain suppliers are offering "Loyalty Rewards" that can lead to substantial savings on your purchases. They reward you for being a long term trusted customer. Instead of paying Google, Bing or any other search engine for the privilege of being found through "Search", these companies would prefer to pay you for your loyalty and referrals.

Our Members Ink Cash Referral Program has already paid out over $47,800 in rewards during the first 8 months, since launch date.

Wide Format Printing Industry Development

Wide Format Printing
My Print Resource spoke to Smyth about "technological developments and application trends within the wide-format space". He stated that inkjet print is "taking a share from the analogue space", while "interesting possibilities are being researched" at an industrial level, and noted that in terms of application "users are exploring new business avenues" including "visual communication, interior decoration, textile, commercial printing, packaging and emerging industrial sectors".

The wide-format sector is "also taking a critical approach towards its processes and their environmental impact", he added, with sustainability "a key trend" and discussions on "advantages and disadvantages" of ink types, substrates, energy usage and recycling "demonstrating the environmental consciousness of the industry". He also believes that textile, print interior decoration and industrial production – which My Print Resource highlighted as "recurrent words" in the industry – are "all important growing areas for wide-format and high-end inkjet as a whole".

Inkjet technology can "provide quality, productivity, economic short run printing capability and quick turnaround", and all of these benefits "have been recognized and increasingly exploited". In textile printing, Smyth pointed to a "noticeable shift from low labor cost-based supply to digital-based premium applications", providing "fast delivery in roll-to-roll and direct-to-garment" items. This, together with "increasing emphasis on quality" is "extremely positive", as it "acknowledges digital textile print as an added value to open up new business opportunities".

In technology terms, Smyth believes inkjet is the "most rapidly-changing area within the print industry", as all of its elements "contribute to push the technology forward". He added that ink manufacturers "are focused on broadening the range of formulations" to add to the applications of inkjet, while "workflow is becoming increasingly important" because it allows "end-to-end control across the production and ordering chain".

3D Printing Market is Rapidly Growing to $20 Billion Industry by 2019

3d printer
New research suggests that the market could reach the valuation before the end of the decade.

ZDNet reported on the findings from analysts Canalys, who previously announced that the 3D printing market was worth $3.3 billion worldwide. Canalys stated that the sector is on track to generate around $5.2 billion this year, and will "become a double-digit billion dollar market" by mid-2016, before growing to a value of $20 billion by 2019.

The site notes that the results indicate 3D printing "isn't dwindling away any time soon", with the sector including printers as well as "associated materials and services". It also added that the market is set to "continue to upend the traditional manufacturing market, as it allows people to print real-life products and part replacements from their home or office".

3D printing is "also having a remarkable effect on manufacturing, automotive, medical and other vertical industries", which are "finding new revenue streams" in the sector. Canalys Research Analyst Joe Kempton commented that "we have seen improving print speeds, a wider range of materials and new forms of additive manufacturing methods". He added that "an increase in vendors from Asia" has seen the region "take on dominant existing markets, such as Germany and the US".

Chance to Destroy Your Printer

Smashed Printer
University Office Technologies will give a new MFP to the winner of its competition, and drop their old device from a crane.

The office products dealer, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, announced its "Motor City Copier Crush" competition will take place on 22 April. Administrative professionals from the local area can enter the competition to win a new Sharp Multi-Functional Printer, and the winner will get to keep the new device and have an unwanted copier or printer dropped from a 60-foot crane.

The "most compelling submission" as to why someone's printer "deserves to be replaced with a brand new one" will win the competition. University Office Technologies is offering to install the new machine, train users in how to use it and provide a service plan as well. The crane drop meanwhile will take place in the company's own car park, where the winner will watch as their old machine drops into a waste container from a locally rented crane.

The event is related to Administrative Professionals' Day, or "Secretary's' Day", which also falls on 22 April. Admin professionals need to submit their entry to the company before 17 April. The winner will be chosen and notified by 20 April, with the "copier drop" and installation of the new Sharp machine taking place on 22 April.

Any admin professional working in the Michigan counties of Wayne, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw or Livingston in a business with 10 to 100 staff can enter the competition, and you can read more about the competition here.
