Compatible and Remanufactured Printer Cartridges, Why Should You Buy Them

There are three categories which, explain the "Printer Cartridge" market today. These are the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) cartridges, compatible "new built" cartridges and the original OEM remanufactured product (commonly referred to as a recycled cartridges).

The OEM printer cartridges carry a heavy "promotion cost" and are therefore much more expensive in the consumer marketplace. These printer cartridges are priced to recapture most of the discount cost of the printer you purchase. For an eye opening example, currently (one) 1 oz. of HP 920XLBK ink costs about $38.45 which calculates to $4,921.60 per gallon. For the same amount of money you can buy:

• 1,922.50 gallons of gasoline
• 1,235.58 gallons of milk
• 310 bottles of Jack Daniels Whiskey (750 ml each)
• 1,971 cans of Red Bull (12 oz. each)
• 2,485 cans of Coca-Cola Zero (12 oz. each)

While you can purchase the same HP 920XLBK for a much lower price when you buy compatible or remanufactured cartridges. Usually you can save 40% - 70% when choosing quality alternative replacement printer supplies. The key words here is "quality alternative products".

Aftermarket ink and toner cartridges are not necessary lower quality than the OEMs. When manufactured or remanufactured by established companies, who use approved and certified manufacturing processes and testing standards. Wide Format Printing Industry Development

My Print Resource spoke to Smyth about "technological developments and application trends within the wide-format space". He stated that inkjet print is "taking a share from the analogue space", while "interesting possibilities are being researched" at an industrial level, and noted that in terms of application "users are exploring new business avenues" including "visual communication, interior decoration, textile, commercial printing, packaging and emerging industrial sectors".

The wide-format sector is "also taking a critical approach towards its processes and their environmental impact", he added, with sustainability "a key trend" and discussions on "advantages and disadvantages" of ink types, substrates, energy usage and recycling "demonstrating the environmental consciousness of the industry". He also believes that textile, print interior decoration and industrial production – which My Print Resource highlighted as "recurrent words" in the industry – are "all important growing areas for wide-format and high-end inkjet as a whole".

Inkjet technology can "provide quality, productivity, economic short run printing capability and quick turnaround", and all of these benefits "have been recognized and increasingly exploited". In textile printing, Smyth pointed to a "noticeable shift from low labor cost-based supply to digital-based premium applications", providing "fast delivery in roll-to-roll and direct-to-garment" items. This, together with "increasing emphasis on quality" is "extremely positive", as it "acknowledges digital textile print as an added value to open up new business opportunities".

In technology terms, Smyth believes inkjet is the "most rapidly-changing area within the print industry", as all of its elements "contribute to push the technology forward". He added that ink manufacturers "are focused on broadening the range of formulations" to add to the applications of inkjet, while "workflow is becoming increasingly important" because it allows "end-to-end control across the production and ordering chain".

3D Printing Market is Rapidly Growing to $20 Billion Industry by 2019

New research suggests that the market could reach the valuation before the end of the decade.

ZDNet reported on the findings from analysts Canalys, who previously announced that the 3D printing market was worth $3.3 billion worldwide. Canalys stated that the sector is on track to generate around $5.2 billion this year, and will "become a double-digit billion dollar market" by mid-2016, before growing to a value of $20 billion by 2019.

The site notes that the results indicate 3D printing "isn't dwindling away any time soon", with the sector including printers as well as "associated materials and services". It also added that the market is set to "continue to upend the traditional manufacturing market, as it allows people to print real-life products and part replacements from their home or office".

3D printing is "also having a remarkable effect on manufacturing, automotive, medical and other vertical industries", which are "finding new revenue streams" in the sector. Canalys Research Analyst Joe Kempton commented that "we have seen improving print speeds, a wider range of materials and new forms of additive manufacturing methods". He added that "an increase in vendors from Asia" has seen the region "take on dominant existing markets, such as Germany and the US".

University Office Technologies will give a new MFP to the winner of its competition, and drop their old device from a crane.

The office products dealer, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, announced its "Motor City Copier Crush" competition will take place on 22 April. Administrative professionals from the local area can enter the competition to win a new Sharp Multi-Functional Printer, and the winner will get to keep the new device and have an unwanted copier or printer dropped from a 60-foot crane.

The "most compelling submission" as to why someone's printer "deserves to be replaced with a brand new one" will win the competition. University Office Technologies is offering to install the new machine, train users in how to use it and provide a service plan as well. The crane drop meanwhile will take place in the company's own car park, where the winner will watch as their old machine drops into a waste container from a locally rented crane.

The event is related to Administrative Professionals' Day, or "Secretary's' Day", which also falls on 22 April. Admin professionals need to submit their entry to the company before 17 April. The winner will be chosen and notified by 20 April, with the "copier drop" and installation of the new Sharp machine taking place on 22 April.

Pitney Bowes and HP Renew Global Strategy Contract

The alliance between Pitney Bowes and HP extends their integrated delivery portfolio.

PI World reported that HP will be able to work with Pitney Bowes' innovations such as the IntelliJet Printing System, which is used by printers and mailers to streamline operations. The integrated system they together provide is designed to reduce management complexity for clients juggling multiple providers. The partnership began in 2009.

HP Releases New Laser Printers and Toner Supplies

The new range of printers are the "smallest and fastest LaserJets" released, with HP stating that the launch "represents our most significant laser printing re-engineering since the introduction of the first LaserJet in 1984". The machines, "designed to make businesses more efficient", contain new toner cartridges using JetIntelligence technology, and use "up to 53% less energy, take up to 40% less space and wake up, print and duplex in a fraction of the time", according to HP.

The new machines include the Color LaserJet Pro M252 series, MFP M277 series, and the M552 and M553 series, with all the devices featuring a "smaller footprint, easier set-up and installation" and "up to 40% faster printing from sleep". The M252 series is around 33% smaller than competitors, and is aimed at "small workgroups", with the "fastest first page out in its class" alongside mobile printing compatibility.

The MFP M277 series meanwhile is the "smallest laser MFP" and offers "the fastest two-sided printing in its class", while the M552 and M553 series are "ideal for larger workgroups of 5 to 15 users printing up to 6,000 pages per month", with high speed prints, the "lowest total energy consumption and fastest double-sided printing speeds in their class". These two are also the firs machines to include Google Cloud Print 2.0 for cloud printing.

The toner cartridges feature "the latest in toner formulation", with HP's JetIntelligence technology and ColorSphere 3 toner offering up to "33% more professional-quality prints" and "protection against counterfeits" with "innovative anti-fraud technology". The ColorSphere 3 toner is "the latest in toner formulation", according to HP, and features a "durable shell and soft core" designed to "keep up" with the high-speed of the machines.

Despite the "more durable shell", the soft core of the toner particles melt 'at a much lower temperature, requiring far less heat to melt", with the result "higher page yields from a more compact and energy-efficient printer". The cartridge meanwhile delivers "more pages with fewer interventions", with page maximizer technology allowing for "less internal wear" and "more pages per cartridge", while new print gauge technology "intelligently predicts toner levels".

The anti-counterfeiting technology is "built into every JetIntelligence toner cartridge", with HP stating that customers "have more protection that easily identifies counterfeit cartridges", and assisting "customer-initiated anti-theft and office-wide printing policies". Auto-seal removal meanwhile is said to "make cartridge installation easier than ever". The JetAdvantage Private Print function meanwhile allows users to protect print jobs in the cloud and on the machines.

Tuan Tran, Vice President and General Manager of HP's LaserJet Hardware and Technology Organisation, commented: "Business customers are looking for smart, affordable solutions that seamlessly integrate into today's smaller, more communal work spaces. We started with the customer and designed the new LaserJet platform from the inside out to be leaner, faster and smarter than ever before to help meet the demands of the modern office."

The printers will be available from 1 April, with the M252 at a recommended price of $225, the MFP M277 of $346, and the M552 and M553 of $560.

3 New Business Inkjets from Epson

Network Asia reported on the release of the new printers, which include the WF-2651, 2661 and 2631, with the OEM stating that the devices are "purpose-built" for the SOHO and office markets to "save business's desktop space and lower their printing costs" through "a host of convenience-enhancing features".

The "ultra-compact" printers include an automatic document feeder with a 30-sheet capacity, Epson Connect features for mobile printing – including iPrint for mobile printing, email print and remote print – "flexible shared printing" through wireless connectivity, and Wi-Fi Direct functionality for connecting up to four devices "without the need for a router".

Each printer can also access Apple's AirPrint and Google's Cloud Print, and has an LCD screen, while the 2651 and 2661 have Epson’s PrecisionCore printhead technology for "versatile, high-speed" prints at 33 ppm. The 2631 has a print resolution of 5,760 dpi and a print speed of 34 ppm and a "small footprint", while the 2661 has NFC (near-field communication) functionality, making it the "first Epson device to offer this functionality", and all three utilize the OEM's DURABrite Ultra pigment inks, which offer "high quality prints that are smudge, fade and water resistant".

Curious:Seized Inkjet Cartridges Containing Drugs

Customs Today reported on the seizure of 18 lbs of crystal methamphetamine, or 'crystal meth' in Jakarta by Indonesia's National Police, with 11 smugglers arrested who were said to be "members of an international drug smuggling ring" operating in the city, and the syndicate said to have been "controlled from China", with drugs distributed from Jakarta to “other big cities throughout the country".

4.6 lbs of the drugs were "hidden inside 14 printer ink cartridges from China", with Senior Commissioner Rikwanto stating that "the syndicate used a new method by hiding their drugs inside ink cartridges and mini diesel machines before they delivered them here". Chief Brigadier General Anjan Parmuka Putra meanwhile noted that the group "distributed the drugs to Jakarta because they saw a higher demand here where people were willing to pay a lot more compared to the Chinese market".

One pound of 'crystal meth' is sold for around Rp 300 million ($23,341) in China, but in Indonesia drug dealers can sell the same amount for around Rp one billion to 1.5 billion ($77,909 to $116,863). The raids took place in January, with three separate raids resulting in the seizure and the arrest of the 11 men, with all facing "multiple charges" including Article 114 clause two of the country's Law No. 35/2009, which "carries the death penalty as a maximum sentence".

Anjan stated that he hopes "the court will sentence all of them to death, or at least they should get life sentences", and claimed that the raids will have "saved around 8,100 people in the country from drug addiction", while Rikwanto noted that Jakarta's "lavish nightlife" had made it "a lucrative destination for drug-trafficking syndicates". Customs Today pointed out that the Indonesian judicial system “is currently under the international spotlight" as two Australians are facing the death penalty "for trying to smuggle about 17.6 lbs of heroin" into the country in 2005.

US Office Retailers Losing Market Share To Smaller Stores

MarketWatch reported that the survey showed office supply stores earned around $20 billion in revenue in 2014, but that this has "been declining" at an average of about 2.60% every year for the past five years "mostly thanks to recessionary factors" including "weak consumer confidence and low disposable incomes", as well as the "growing popularity" of both "discount and other retailers that may sell similar items".

This is perhaps reflected in the recent merger between Staples and Office Depot in the USA, which we previously reported on, and which "couldn't have come at a better time" according to Cartridge World North America, as the franchise network's 1,200 stores expanded in 2014 to "become the only international franchise to provide printers, printer supplies and full-service support" to SMBs, filling a need "that big box and office supply stores are not meeting".

IBISWorld stated that "traditional office supply stores have long been under pressure from discount stores, super centers, warehouse clubs and online retailers which are able to offer lower prices, made possible by cost savings achieved through bulk purchasing and low overhead costs", and the article noted that "if you're looking for deals — even on basic stuff for work — you may want to look beyond your neighbourhood office supply store".

In turn, office supply store revenue "is expected to continue to fall over the next five years", again thanks "in part" to "increased competition from discount and other retailers". Among the products that are cheaper at smaller stores include printer cartridges, with "price clubs" offering smaller stores "buying power" and meaning they were "often less expensive". The survey added that online retail customers were also "more satisfied with their purchases", which has meant business has been taken away from big and small brick-and-mortar shops in the US.

The report did add that for balance that "there are plenty of deals to be had" at the main chains, especially if items need to be shipped, while "savvy shoppers" can "score great deals" through coupons, loyalty programs and "aggressive seasonal sales", or through "being opportunistic" when looking for the cheapest price.
